Martell Distilleries tour & tasting - Jarnac
 |
The Martell distilleries tour is very interesting and lasts an hour, focussing strongly on Martell's history,
the distillation and grading process, finishing with a complementary drink for adults and face-painting for kids. Tours are in Enlish or Fench. Pre book or just turn up- but be prepared to wait for an English tour. The town of Jarnac itself (where the distillery is) also has some wonderful cafes and restaurants for lunch and a small adventure park for children. You can also take river tours here which makes the drive-time more worthwhile.

Remy Martin Distilleries tour & tasting - Jarnac
Easier to find than Martell and the tour is more comprehensive. Remy, the second largest Cognac producer takes you through barrel making - and how these affect the flavour; a look at the vineyards; a description of the different grapes and soil and the differences between the grades of cognac, finishing with a tasting. Part of the tour includes a ride on a train - so something for the kids as well. Whole tour lasts just over an hour. Tours can be pre-booked or just turn up - although you may have to wait for an English tour. Fee is 6 for adults but children under 12 go free. Free parking and easily found by following the ring road around Cognac. Approx 1.5 hours drive from Chabanais. There is a
shop where you can buy Cognac to take home. |
Cave de St. Sornin vineyard tour and wine tasting - nr La Rochefoucauld
St. Sornin is a coopoerative wine producer in the Charente. It does tours of the cave by arrangement and you can buy St. Sornin afterwards in the shop. The Charente is not a big wine producer opting instead for mixing its grapes with Cognac to produce "Pineau des Charentes". However St. Sornin - certainly the "Privilege" is very pleasant both on the pallette and wallet.

Domaine Chater - nr Eymet, Dordgne
Domaine Chater is an English-owned vineyard near Bergerac in the Dordogne. This wine is definitely to be sniffed at! Have received a "Coup de Cour" from the Guide Hachette and being recommended by Andreas Larsson - the world's top somellier. They will hold winery tours by pre-arrangement and you can buy wine directly from them after your visit.
